Growing Healthy Kids

A Project of the Food Security Partners of Middle Tennessee

Get Involved

Eat in: See and taste the foods served at school by joining your child for lunch. Consider teaming up with your school's PTO to organize an "Eat in the Cafeteria Day" for parents.

Research: There are a variety of successful healthy school food programs across the country. Become familiar with how other communities have implemented school food projects and made positive school food changes.

Organize: Coordinate a group of stakeholders in your community. Bring together parents, teachers, farmers, students, and other interested community members to discuss the possibilities for healthy school food changes at your school.

Begin: Start with small, feasible steps. You may want to start with having healthy snacks at classroom parties instead of unhealthy treats. Other ideas include starting a school garden, implementing garden education in the classroom, and taking students on farm field-trips.

Advocate: Raise your voice for changes in the school food environment! Talk to local school food decision makers and let them know your interest in healthier school foods.
